Get busy living... or get busy dying
 這是影片里的一句經(jīng)典臺詞，也是兩種生活態(tài)度的寫照。Red在影片里是個被關(guān)押了40年的囚犯，對自由他早已失望，在監(jiān)獄中活得游刃有余，而從這里出去是一件需要極大勇氣的事，因?yàn)樵谡嬲默F(xiàn)實(shí)生活中早已沒有了他的位置，他是個局外人，已經(jīng)被監(jiān)獄“制度化”了。他在監(jiān)獄里的每一天，不見得完全了無生趣，但是其生活態(tài)度就和大多數(shù)囚犯一樣：gets busy dying。這是一個近乎完美的囚犯形象，是演員弗里曼創(chuàng)造的表演境界。
與Red相反的是Andy。這個從一進(jìn)監(jiān)獄就特立獨(dú)行的人，監(jiān)獄里將近20年的磨難還是沒有磨滅他心里的希望，一有機(jī)會就努力去體會自由和正常的生活。他通過自己的智慧和專長獲得了監(jiān)獄長的器重，借此他得以擴(kuò)建監(jiān)獄里的圖書館，為囚犯們營造一個好的精神家園。他教人讀書寫字，在監(jiān)獄里受人尊敬。這些都可以說是他gets busy living的寫照。所以他才帶給我們極大的精神沖擊。
